Orbera Gastric Balloon Q & A

What is the Orbera gastric balloon?

The Orbera gastric balloon is a medical device that helps with weight loss. It’s a minimally invasive and reversible treatment that combines weight loss surgery with diet and lifestyle changes that help you reach your weight goals without permanently changing your stomach.

Using an endoscope, the gastroenterologist at Aliva Weight Loss places the balloon in your stomach and fills it with saline, limiting the space in your stomach. This causes you to feel full faster, longer and eat less.

The Orbera gastric balloon remains in place for six months, and then it’s removed.

How is the Orbera gastric balloon placed?

At your consultation, your provider at ALIVA Weight Loss explains what you can expect during the placement of the Orbera gastric balloon. You’re given medication to help you relax before they insert the endoscope in your mouth.

They advance the endoscope into your stomach, evaluating the esophagus and stomach to ensure that you have no health problems that could make placing the balloon unsafe. Such health problems include a large hiatal hernia or stomach ulcer.

Once in the stomach, the gastroenterologist inserts the balloon and fills it with saline, enlarging it to take up about one-third of your stomach. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Follow a liquid diet while your stomach adjusts to the gastric balloon, and then slowly advance to a regular diet. Though results vary, you can lose up to 10% of your weight over the first six months.

After removing the Orbera gastric balloon, you will follow the plan provided by your dietician/health coach. There is facility to provide them for 6 months after the Gastric Balloon is removed.
